White Spots on Azalea Leaves - Cause and Treatment

White Spots on Azalea Leaves

I always tell my neighbors that my azalea plants are low-maintenance, so I don't worry about them much. But one day I noticed the leaves were looking a little strange, and that caught my attention.

The leaves looked like someone had sprinkled tiny white dots all over them. At first, I thought it was dust or maybe pollen from nearby plants. I even tried wiping one leaf with my finger, but the spots didn't go away.

Then I checked the underside of the leaves and noticed tiny insects along with small black spots.
They were actually lace bugs.

How Lace Bugs Damage Azalea Plants

Lace bugs are very tiny insects that stay mostly on the underside of the leaves. They suck sap from the plant.

When they feed, the top of the leaves starts getting many tiny white or silvery dots. After some time, the leaves can look pale, spotted, and unhealthy.

The strange thing is, when you look at the top of the leaf, you usually don't see the insects at all. They hide underneath the leaves, where most people never think to check.

How I Confirmed the Problem

I gently turned the azalea leaves over to check the underside.

That's when I noticed two clear signs:

  1. Tiny insects under the leaf
  2. Small black spots on the underside

Those black dots are actually insect poop.

Here are the simple things I did to control it. Actually, these methods worked best for me.

Washed the Plant

First, I washed the plant with a strong spray of water.

This helps wash many insects off the leaves and reduces the number of pests on the plant.

It's a very simple step, but it really helps.

Neem Oil Spray

I sprayed neem oil after washing the plant.

I mixed:

  • 1 liter water
  • 3–5 ml neem oil
  • A few drops of liquid soap

Then I sprayed the entire azalea plant carefully, especially under the leaves where the insects live.

I repeated this spray every 5–7 days.

The most important thing is to spray the underside of the leaves. Many people only spray the top, but lace bugs hide and live under the leaves. If the spray does not reach there, it usually won't work properly.

I Removed Damaged Leaves

Some leaves were already badly damaged.

I trimmed those leaves and threw them away far from the garden so the insects could not come back.

After about 2–3 weeks, my azalea plant slowly started looking better. The old, damaged leaves still had spots, but the new leaves came out green and healthy, which means the lace bugs were finally under control.
